Presentation of the supercalculator in Armenia

On May 24, 2019 at the Marriott Hotel in Yerevan, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry France Armenia with the Research and Science University of Toulouse and the French University in Armenia (UFAR) presented the supercalculator that the University of Toulouse will offer this year to Armenia and it will be installed in the Engineering City.

The supercalculator provides innovative opportunities to collect and process the most extensive data, which helps to reduce workload and increase data processing efficiency. The supercalculator can create an entirely new data ecosystem, transforming the logic of organizing work in key areas. As Hrach Astsatryan, a representative of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, explains, the supercalculator will analyze satellite images, providing information about the processes taking place in neighboring countries. "The supercalculator will be widely used in areas such as healthcare, education, security, science, environment, etc. It will solve problems that require extensive calculations or data analysis”.

Minister of Education and Science Arayik Harutyunyan, who was also present at the conference, greeted the participants and emphasized the importance of the initiative. "It is very important for us to have such tools on the way to building a high-tech economy. In this age of technology, when data collection, analysis and use are becoming an important tool in the economy, we attach great importance to this donation."

"I am convinced that the cooperation will be effective, our French partners will support us in this issue, as they have a positive experience," said the Minister, expressing his satisfaction with the cooperation.

Rector of the French University in Armenia Jean-Marc Lavest, in his turn, stressed that it is the only supercalculator in the whole South Caucasus, adding that qualified specialists are needed to make full use of all the opportunities provided by it.

The French supercalculator will be installed at the City of Engineering, next to the Ministry of Defense. Transportation and installation costs will be provided by Armenia.

The supercalculator costing a few million euros will be in Armenia by the end of 2019.
